How to Use an AED to Save a Life

Using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can save someone who has suddenly collapsed and is not breathing. An AED is a device that gives an electric shock to the heart. This shock can help the heart start beating normally again.

First, check the scene is safe. Call for emergency help or ask someone to call 10177 or your local emergency number.

Steps for Using an AED

  1. Turn on the AED. It will give clear voice instructions.
  2. Expose the person’s chest and make sure it is dry.
  3. Attach the AED pads to the chest as shown in the pictures on the pads. One pad goes on the upper right side of the chest and the other on the lower left side.
  4. Let the AED analyse the heart rhythm. Do not touch the person during this time.
  5. If the AED tells you to, press the shock button. Make sure everyone is clear of the person.
  6. After the shock, the AED will tell you when to give CPR. Follow prompts for chest compressions and rescue breaths if trained.
  7. Keep following the AED’s instructions until paramedics arrive or the person starts to move and breathe normally.

Always remember to stay calm and follow the voice instructions from the AED. Using an AED quickly increases the chance of survival for someone with sudden cardiac arrest.
