Recovery Position and Basic Life Support Techniques

Recovery Position and Basic Life Support Techniques are essential skills in first aid. They help keep an unconscious person safe and improve their chance of recovery until medical help arrives.

How to Place Someone in the Recovery Position

If a person is unconscious but breathing, the recovery position keeps their airway open and stops choking on vomit or saliva.

  1. Kneel beside the person and straighten their legs.
  2. Place the arm nearest to you at a right angle to their body, with the palm facing up.
  3. Bring the far arm across the chest and hold the back of their hand against the cheek closest to you.
  4. Bend the far knee up so the foot rests flat on the ground.
  5. Carefully roll the person onto their side by pulling the bent knee toward you.
  6. Tilt their head back slightly to keep the airway open.
  7. Make sure their mouth is facing downward to allow fluid to drain.

Basic Life Support Techniques

Basic Life Support (BLS) can save lives during emergencies like cardiac arrest. It includes chest compressions and rescue breaths to keep blood and oxygen flowing.

Steps for Adult CPR

  1. Check for danger and response from the person.
  2. If no response and not breathing normally, call emergency services immediately.
  3. Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest, with the other hand on top.
  4. Press down hard and fast at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
  5. After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths by tilting the head back, pinching the nose, and breathing into their mouth.
  6. Repeat the cycle of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until help arrives or the person responds.

Remember, Recovery Position and Basic Life Support Techniques are vital first response actions. Practising these can help save a life in emergencies.
