Simple Steps to Save a Life with CPR
Knowing how to perform CPR step-by-step (adults and children) can save a life in an emergency. CPR helps keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs when the heart stops beating. Follow these clear, practical steps to do CPR safely.
Step-by-Step Guide to CPR for Adults and Children
- Check Safety: Make sure the scene is safe for you and the victim.
- Assess Response: Gently shake the person and ask loudly, “Are you okay?” If no response, call for help.
- Call Emergency Services: Dial 112 or 10177 immediately or ask someone to call.
- Open Airway: Tilt the head back gently and lift the chin to open the airway.
- Check Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for normal breathing for 5 to 10 seconds.
- Start Compressions:
- For adults: Place hands in the centre of the chest and press down hard and fast, about 5-6 cm deep at 100-120 compressions per minute.
- For children (1 year to puberty): Use one or two hands and press down about 5 cm deep at the same rate.
- Give Rescue Breaths: After 30 compressions, give 2 breaths. Pinch the nose, seal your mouth over theirs, and breathe in until the chest rises. Use a barrier mask if available.
- Repeat Cycles: Continue with 30 compressions and 2 breaths until help arrives or the person shows signs of life.
Always remain calm and confident. If you are unsure about giving rescue breaths, do continuous chest compressions until help arrives. Practising CPR regularly improves your skills for real situations.
