How to Stay Safe from Smoke and Heat in a Fire

Techniques to protect yourself from smoke and heat are very important during a fire. Smoke and heat can quickly cause injury or even death. Knowing what to do helps you stay calm and safe until you are out of danger.

First, smoke is dangerous because it contains harmful gases and makes it hard to breathe. Heat can burn your skin and damage your lungs. To stay safe, you must keep low to the ground since smoke rises. The air near the floor is clearer and cooler.

When escaping a burning building, always crawl or stay as close to the floor as possible. Cover your mouth and nose with a damp cloth if you can. This helps reduce smoke inhalation.

Steps to Protect Yourself from Smoke and Heat

  1. Stay low: Move close to the ground where the air is better to breathe and cooler.
  2. Cover your face: Use a wet cloth over your mouth and nose to filter out smoke particles.
  3. Check doors: Before opening any door, carefully feel if it is hot with the back of your hand. If hot, do not open it – the fire may be behind it.
  4. Stop, drop and roll: If your clothes catch fire, drop to the ground and roll to put out flames. Cover your face while rolling.
  5. Use a wet cloth on skin: If you are caught in heat or flames, shielding skin with a wet towel or cloth can reduce burns.
  6. Move quickly but carefully: Escape as fast as possible without running, to avoid falling or injuring yourself.

Never touch metal or glass surfaces during a fire without protection as they can be very hot and cause burns.

If trapped, seal cracks under doors with wet towels to stop smoke from coming in. Signal for help by waving a bright cloth near a window.

After escaping, go to a safe place and call emergency services immediately. Do not go back inside for any reason.

By following these techniques to protect yourself from smoke and heat, you reduce your risk of serious injury during a fire. Always practise fire safety and know your escape routes.
