  • Establish a method for booking guests in and out of the premises. (Some businesses need visitors to make reservations in advance.)
  • Make a visitor pass for each visitor that specifies who they are and where they are permitted to go. Color code the pass so that you and other employees know who is a guest.
  • Visitors should be escorted at all times to avoid entering restricted areas.
  • Adopt a “challenge culture” toward anyone not wearing a visiting pass in your restricted locations.
  • Visitors should always return their passes before leaving the premises. Have a system in place to track how many visitor cards have been issued and returned. Notify your management of any lost or stolen passes.
  • Set up a procedure for accepting delivery to a single agreed-upon location, especially if they are unexpected. Do not be distracted; always request identification.

Working until late

When working late, stay safe by staying in continual connection with someone. If you are the sole employee at the front desk, keep in touch with a co-worker, your supervisor, or family members so they know where you are and that you are secure. If there is security on duty, notify them that you are in the building. You can also request that they check in on you on a regular basis.

When you depart

Place keys in a secure spot, set the alarm, and leave the building secure. If there is security present, notify them that you are leaving the building.
