Western Cape Government Bursary Programme

Western Cape Government Health and Wellness Full-Time Bursary Programme

Overview

The Department of Health and Wellness conducts an ongoing analysis of education, training, and development requirements for priority occupational groups within the health sector. This analysis informs the provision of bursaries to train current and potential employees, ensuring alignment with the sector’s needs. The Department engages with higher educational institutions across South Africa to ensure the availability of training for specific qualifications and skills required in the health sector.

Aim of the Full-Time Bursary Programme

The Full-Time Bursary Programme is designed to support unemployed residents of the Western Cape in obtaining qualifications needed for the health sector. The bursary provides financial aid for selected qualifications based on the Western Cape’s healthcare sector needs for a specific period. Given the limited funding, applications are subjected to a selection process to identify deserving candidates.

The programme includes a Community Service project to ensure that bursary holders gain the necessary experience. Upon obtaining their qualification, bursary holders are expected to apply for available positions within the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness. The aim is to attract individuals with the required competencies, knowledge, and skills to join the Department. Bursary holders are obligated to work within the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness as part of the bursary repayment.

Health Science Study Fields

Bursaries are offered for the following health science study fields:

  • Nursing
  • Medical (MBChB)

Note: More health science study fields may be added or removed each academic year based on departmental service delivery needs.
