Department of Cooperative Governance (DCoG) Bursary Awards for 2025

The Department of Cooperative Governance (DCoG), through the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), is offering bursaries for students pursuing undergraduate, post-graduate, or master’s degrees in Disaster Management or Fire Technology/Engineering qualifications (excluding certificate courses and PhD qualifications) at recognized public higher education institutions in South Africa.

Conditions of Eligibility

  • Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
  • Program: Accepted/registered/applied for an undergraduate, post-graduate, or master’s full programme in Disaster Management or Fire Technology/Engineering at a recognized public higher institution in South Africa (certificate courses and PhD qualifications are not eligible).

Requirements

Undergraduate/Post-Graduate Applicants

  • Certified copy of a valid South African Identity Document.
  • Certified copy of a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
  • Brief Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages).
  • Undergraduate applicants: NSC with an average of 60% and above.
  • Post-graduate applicants: Latest qualification with an average of 60% and above.
  • Enrolled applicants: Mid-year academic results with an average of 60% and above.
  • Proof of acceptance/registration/application for a full programme in Disaster Management or Fire Technology/Engineering.
  • Unemployed applicants: Proof of household income of less than R350 000 per annum or a detailed affidavit in case of zero household income.
  • Employed applicants: Proof of income of less than R350 000 per annum.

Master’s Applicants

  • Certified copy of a valid South African Identity Document.
  • Certified copy of a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
  • Brief Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages, highlighting previous and current employment and academic qualifications).
  • Latest qualification with an average of 65% and above.
  • Enrolled applicants: Mid-year academic transcript with an average of 65% and above.
  • Proof of application/acceptance/registration for a full programme in Disaster Management or Fire Technology/Engineering.
  • 1-2 page concept note of proposed research on one of the 16 Priority Thematic Areas (Research Topic, Background/Introduction, Research Problem, Research Objectives & Methods). A guideline on the thematic areas is available at NDMC Bursary Guidelines.

Allowances

  • Coverage: 100% tuition fees, including registration and research allowance (capped at R11 000).
