SPEBS: SAICET Patrons’ Engineering Bursary Scheme
Overview
The SPEBS bursary scheme, initiated in 1992 by the South African Institute of Civil Engineering Technicians and Technologists (SAICET), stands for SAICET Patrons’ Engineering Bursary Scheme. Following SAICET’s merger with the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), SPEBS was retained as a vital part of SAICE’s outreach programmes.
How Does SPEBS Work?
SPEBS provides financial assistance to academically deserving and financially needy students pursuing a National Diploma or a Degree in Civil Engineering at any South African tertiary institution.
- Eligibility: Bursaries are awarded to students who have passed their first level (S1) exams for National Diploma programs and first-year exams for degree programs.
- Funding: Bursaries are granted per semester and are based on the student’s examination results. The funds are intended to partially cover registration, tuition, and books.
- Process: Successful candidates must provide proof of registration for the upcoming semester. Bursary funds are then disbursed directly to the institution, credited to the student’s account.
Financing the Scheme
SPEBS operates as a non-profit venture and relies entirely on donations. Contributions have been received in the form of either donations to the bursary pool or bursaries awarded in the name of patron companies. The scheme is audited annually to ensure transparency.
Advantages for Patron Firms
Patron companies gain access to a pool of talented students. While there is generally no contractual obligation between the contributor and the bursary recipient, some companies choose to offer employment agreements, creating mutual benefits.
Appeal for Donations
SPEBS addresses a significant need in civil engineering education. We invite you to contribute to shaping the future of civil engineering in South Africa. Currently, we award a maximum of R6,500 per student per semester, based on merit. If you wish to support our scheme, please make cheques payable to SPEBS.
