General Information
EY is dedicated to growing and transforming the Chartered Accountancy profession. We believe in supporting individual development from school through university and into the world of work. Our bursaries are awarded to those who demonstrate a commitment to qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and possess an academic record reflecting this potential. In return for the bursary, recipients are required to complete a training contract with EY, lasting a minimum of three years.
Types of Bursaries:
- Academic Merit with Financial Need Bursary: Covers tuition, accommodation, books, and/or meals.
- Academic Merit Bursary: Contributes to a portion of tuition fees.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for a bursary, you must:
- Be a South African citizen with a valid South African identity document.
- Have an academic record with a minimum of four A’s (excluding Life Orientation).
- Be studying towards a relevant CA degree (three to four years) and a year Accounting Honours/Certificate in Theory in Accounting (CTA).
- Be accepted and/or enrolled at a SAICA (South African Institute of Chartered Accountants) accredited university. The list includes:

Applications for the EY Training Contract are open throughout the year. To apply, please include:

- Latest Fee Quotation from the University
- Proof of household income (if applying for the Academic Merit with Financial Need Bursary)
What Does a Chartered Accountant Do?
A Chartered Accountant (CA) analyses and evaluates financial information and business risks for their clients. CA’s are responsible for advising clients on their financial state and identifying areas of potential risk to support the business’s continued viability and profitability. Their work provides assurance to the market, helping investors make informed decisions about investing in a company.
What Happens Once You Enter into a Training Contract with EY?
A training contract lasts three years:
- First Year (Assistants): Get to know the client and their business, and write the Qualifying Exam 1 – Initial Test of Competence (ITC).
- Second Year (Seniors): Take on more responsibility, contribute to the team, and write the Qualifying Exam 2 – Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).
- Third Year (Supervisors): Manage client assignments, supervise and coach junior trainees.
Upon passing both exams and completing the training, you will register with SAICA as a CA(SA).
