Supporting eating and nutrition needs is very important in helping people stay healthy and strong. As a Rehabilitation Support Assistant, you play a key role in making sure clients get the right food and assistance during meals. Proper support can help improve their recovery, energy levels, and overall well-being.

How to Assist with Eating and Nutrition

Many clients may find it difficult to eat on their own because of illness, injury, or disability. They might have trouble chewing, swallowing, or using utensils. Your job is to support them in a way that respects their dignity and independence while keeping them safe.

  1. Prepare the eating area: Make sure the table or tray is clean, comfortable, and free of distractions. Position the client properly, sitting upright if possible, to help with swallowing.
  2. Offer the right foods: Follow any dietary instructions from healthcare professionals, such as soft foods, thickened liquids, or special diets for diabetes or allergies.
  3. Assist with feeding: If the client needs help, offer small bites and allow enough time to chew and swallow. Never rush the process.
  4. Encourage independence: Allow the client to do as much as they can themselves. Offer utensils or adaptive equipment if needed.
  5. Watch for difficulties: Look out for signs of choking or discomfort. If you notice problems, stop feeding and seek help immediately.
  6. Promote hydration: Encourage drinking fluids throughout the day, unless restricted.
  7. Maintain hygiene: Wash hands before and after meals, and help clients clean their hands and face.
  8. Record and report: Keep notes about what and how much the client eats and drinks. Report any changes or concerns to your supervisor.

Remember, supporting eating and nutrition needs is not just about food. It is about helping clients enjoy mealtimes, feel comfortable, and maintain their health. Be patient, kind, and respectful at all times.
