Common Bursary Questions and Answers
Who Qualifies for a Bursary?
- Individuals who are South African citizens or permanent residents.
- Those in Matric or who have completed Matric.
- Students with a strong academic record, including high performance in relevant subjects like Mathematics or Science, depending on the bursary requirements.
- Applicants who are enrolled or have applied to a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa, whether it’s a public university, a TVET college, or a private institution.
- Those who are studying or intend to study full-time (though some bursaries may also support part-time or correspondence studies).
- Applicants who can demonstrate financial need.
How to Apply for a Bursary?
Each bursary listing provides specific instructions on how to apply for that bursary program. Some bursaries have an online application process, while others require you to download an application form that must be submitted via email, fax, post, or hand delivery.
When applying, you will usually need to submit supporting documents, which may include (but are not limited to):
- A certified copy of your South African ID document (or South African permanent residence permit, if applicable).
- A certified copy of your academic records (your most recent Matric results if you are currently in Matric, your Matric certificate if you have completed Matric, or a full academic record if you are currently studying at the tertiary level).
- Proof of application, registration, or acceptance to a tertiary institution (on the institution’s letterhead).
- A motivational letter explaining why you should be selected for the bursary.
- Proof of household income showing financial need (this includes proof of income or proof of unemployment from your parents or guardians).
- Proof of residence, if the bursary specifies that it only covers individuals residing in a certain region.
What Expenses or Fees Does a Bursary Cover?
Bursaries can provide either partial or full coverage. A partial bursary covers a certain amount or portion of your study-related expenses, while a full bursary typically covers all study-related expenses. These may include tuition fees, examination fees, prescribed books and study materials, meals, accommodation, transport, and sometimes a laptop.
Some bursary providers also offer opportunities to complete vacation work at their company, which may be required for certain degree qualifications.
