How to Set Tables Properly in a Restaurant

Table setting standards and techniques are very important for creating a good first impression in a restaurant. A neat and organised table helps customers feel comfortable and ready to enjoy their meal. As a restaurant assistant, you need to know the correct way to set and maintain tables.

Start by making sure the table is clean and free of dust or crumbs. Use a clean cloth to wipe the surface before placing any items. Check that chairs are neatly arranged around the table.

Basic Table Setting Guidelines

  1. Tablecloth or Placemat: Use a clean, ironed tablecloth or individual placemats. They protect the table and add to the look.
  2. Cutlery: Place knives and spoons on the right side of the plate. The knife blade should face the plate. Forks go on the left.
  3. Plate: Place the main plate in the centre of the setting with the edge about 2-3 cm from the table edge.
  4. Glasses: Place the water glass above the knife on the right side, and wine glasses next to it if needed.
  5. Napkin: Place the napkin either on the plate or to the left of the forks.
  6. Bread Plate: If used, place it above the forks with the butter knife on the bread plate.

When setting up for different types of meals, you may add extra utensils like dessert spoons or fish knives. Always arrange these in the order they will be used, from outside in.

Maintain the table during service by removing empty plates, cutlery, and glasses quickly but quietly. Make sure the table stays tidy and attractive until the guests finish their meal.

Following these table setting standards and techniques helps your restaurant look professional and keeps customers happy. Practice setting tables until you feel confident doing it correctly and quickly.
