Quality Assurance (QA) is about planning and organising. It is a system of activities designed to give confidence that quality requirements will be met. QA looks at how work is done, aiming to prevent mistakes before they happen. This includes creating standard procedures, training workers, and regularly checking that the site and materials meet the set standards.

In contrast, Quality Control (QC) is about checking the actual work. It involves inspection and testing to find defects or problems in materials, workmanship, or the finished product. QC ensures that the output matches the quality standards and specifications. When something does not meet the standards, corrective actions are taken to fix it.

Key Differences Between Quality Control and Quality Assurance

  1. Focus: QA focuses on preventing defects by improving the process. QC focuses on identifying defects in the final product or work.
  2. Timing: QA happens throughout the project before or during construction. QC happens mostly after work is done or at certain inspection points.
  3. Responsibility: QA is the job of management and planners who set up systems. QC is carried out by inspectors and workers who test and check the work.
  4. Purpose: QA ensures the process is correct to avoid errors. QC finds and corrects errors in the product.
  5. Approach: QA is proactive, focusing on building quality into the process. QC is reactive, focusing on fixing problems after they appear.

In construction, combining good Quality Assurance with effective Quality Control is vital. QA sets the foundation by designing a strong plan and procedures. QC checks results and fixes issues to meet the project’s quality goals.

For example, during a road construction project, QA may involve creating quality plans for materials, equipment, and work steps. QC would involve testing materials like asphalt or concrete to ensure they meet specifications, and inspecting the road surface for defects.
