Position Purpose
The Trainee Train Assistant supports the Train Driver in operating locomotives safely and efficiently across different rail systems.
This includes:
- Freight trains
- Heavy haul operations
- Passenger trains
- High-speed locomotives
The goal is to ensure cargo reaches its destination safely, on time, and without damage while maintaining strict safety standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The role involves hands-on operational responsibilities from the first day of training.
Shift Preparation and Duty Allocation
- Sign on duty and receive shift responsibilities
- Determine locomotive preparation requirements
- Obtain and check equipment
- Prepare and clean working areas
- Assist with locomotive start-up and brake tests
- Dispatch locomotive
Locomotive Preparation
- Identify locomotive assigned
- Place equipment on board
- Supplement required equipment
- Conduct safety checks
- Assist with brake tests
Communication Equipment Preparation
- Obtain radios and handsets
- Test communication functionality
Pre-Trip Train Preparation
- Attach and detach vehicles
- Mount telemeters and indicators
- Complete vehicle and vacuum forms
- Conduct brake tests with Train Driver
- Examine train for safety compliance
Shunting Activities
- Execute shunting operations
- Move and place wagons
- Update vehicle lists
- Manage loading and offloading processes
Enroute Operations
- Assist driver with signal verification
- Observe train movement
- Reset locomotive trip systems
- Protect train during incidents
- Assist during emergencies
Administration Duties
- Complete train journal after every shift
- Provide feedback on route incidents
- Submit reports to Section Manager
Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 certificate
- Mathematics and/or Physical Science required
Age and Safety Regulations
- Individuals younger than 21 cannot perform train driving duties
- Medical fitness mandatory

Psychomotor Assessment
