As a Library Assistant, you play an integral role in supporting the efficient functioning of a library. Your responsibilities include assisting patrons, organizing materials, maintaining records, and contributing to a welcoming and organized library environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist library patrons in locating books, periodicals, and other materials.
- Provide information and guidance to patrons on library policies and procedures.
- Check in and out library materials, ensuring accurate record-keeping.
- Assist with library cataloging, shelving, and arranging materials in proper order.
- Process new library acquisitions, including labeling and covering books.
- Help patrons with basic computer tasks, including using library databases and online resources.
- Manage overdue materials, issue fines, and send reminders to patrons as needed.
- Assist with library events and programs, such as story hours or book clubs.
- Answer phone calls and respond to inquiries or direct calls to the appropriate staff.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of library shelves and common areas.
- Participate in regular inventory counts and restock library supplies.
- Handle interlibrary loans and coordinate with other libraries for resource sharing.
- Support the library’s circulation desk, including issuing library cards and collecting fees.
- Assist with the setup and operation of audiovisual equipment and technology for presentations or events.
- Collaborate with library staff to enhance library services and programs.
- Attend training sessions and stay updated on library procedures and resources.
Qualifications:
- Grade 12
- Previous experience in a library or customer service role is beneficial.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Familiarity with library cataloging systems and databases is a plus.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and office equipment.
- Ability to work well in a team and provide friendly customer service.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing library needs and procedures.
Additional Information:
- Training will be provided to familiarize Library Assistants with library policies, cataloging systems, and customer service best practices.
- This role may involve occasional lifting of books or materials and standing for extended periods during library events or programs.
